In April 2016, the jazz singer Elena Mindru releases a new album with her new nonet Elena Mindru Third Stream Project. The rhythm section is being reinforced this time by a string quartet led by the great Finnish violinist Maija Linkola and by Sampo Kasurinen on soprano saxophone. The band features also the pianist Tuomas J. Turunen, bassist Eero Seppä and drummer Anssi Tirkkonen.

The new album, entitled Quartphonic, includes eight works from the young jazz composers Sampo Kasurinen, Artturi Rönkä, Visa Oscar and Alex Simu. Both the pianist Tuomas J. Turunen and the singer herself bring their contribution as composers and lyricists for some of the songs. Texts written by Ulriikka Heikinheimo, Louise Carroll, Janne Lehmusvuo and V.A. Koskenniemi have been put to music as well.

The band's music combines in an exciting way jazz and classical music elements. This combination is called Third Stream, which was originally a term introduced by the jazz composer Günter Schuller in the 1950s. Elena Mindru has first experimented with the third stream concept within the Symphonic meets Jazz concert series, in collaboration with different symphony orchestras. The first concert was in 2014 with the Transilvania State Symphony Orchestra. The works were written especially for jazz quartet and symphony orchestra. The project unites composers and performers from both classical and jazz worlds, from both Finland and Romania.

For Quartphonic, some of the compositions included in the Symphonic meets Jazz concerts have been arranged for the Elena Mindru Third Stream Project. Besides, the album also offers new compositions specially written for this nonet, such as Kasurine's Life is But A Dream, Mindru's Let You Be and Turunen's Lighthouse. The songs were recorded at the legendary M1 Studio of the Finnish Radio Yle in the autumn of 2015. The recording session was produced by Markus Partanen.
