Hybrid is Elena Mîndru's first symphonic jazz album, a Hybrid of own compositions, carols, Romanian and Finnish songs.
10 years after her success in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, when Quincy Jones himself, as head of the jury, awarded Elena both the 2nd Prize and the Public Prize, 10 years after the release of her first album – Romanian Christmas Stories, Elena comes back at the end of 2022 with a musical story that celebrates – through feelings and experiences concentrated in 9 pieces – her hybrid life as a Romanian artist living in Finland. A mixture of nostalgia for the home she left behind, of Romanian traditions, poetry reflecting a Nordic landscape, vulnerability, family, the reflection of her childhood values in a completely different space – all of these have found their expression in her first symphonic jazz album featuring her quartet and the Moldovan National Youth Orchestra.
About the Hybrid album, the international music journalist specializing in jazz, Henning Bolte said, “Hybrid can also be considered a statement of one of the highly profiled Romanian jazz musicians working abroad. Romanian and Finnish temperaments are productively united in this project forming an extraordinary Eastern alliance of high significance for Europe.”

100 ROMANIA (2018)
The 100 Romania medley was commissioned to mark 100 years of Romania's independence in 2018 for Elena’s Transylvanian tour together with the Romanian National Youth Orchestra. The work represents a medley of three well-known Romanian folkloric themes: Mociriță, Aseară ți-am luat basma and Lume, lume. Elena Mîndru’s repertoire has previously included Romanian pieces rearranged with jazz harmonies and rhythms, and the choice of the themes in 100 Romania is related to these.
Arranged by the composer and jazz saxophonist Sampo Kasurinen, this piece was intends to create an intercultural mobility by combining the orchestral vision of a Finnish arranger on Romanian folkloric themes within a symphonic jazz structure.
