    Hybrid is Elena Mîndru's first symphonic jazz album, a Hybrid of own compositions, carols, Romanian and Finnish songs.

    10 years after her success in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, when Quincy Jones himself, as head of the jury, awarded Elena both the 2nd Prize and the Public Prize, 10 years after the release of her first album – Romanian Christmas Stories, Elena comes back at the end of 2022 with a musical story that celebrates – through feelings and experiences concentrated in 9 pieces – her hybrid life as a Romanian artist living in Finland. A mixture of nostalgia for the home she left behind, of Romanian traditions, poetry reflecting a Nordic landscape, vulnerability, family, the reflection of her childhood values in a completely different space – all of these have found their expression in her first symphonic jazz album featuring her quartet and the Moldovan National Youth Orchestra.

    About the Hybrid album, the international music journalist specializing in jazz, Henning Bolte said, “Hybrid can also be considered a statement of one of the highly profiled Romanian jazz musicians working abroad. Romanian and Finnish temperaments are productively united in this project forming an extraordinary Eastern alliance of high significance for Europe.”

ASEARĂ PE-NSERATE & LEGĂNELUL LUI IISUS (2020)
Aseară pe-nserate and Legănelul lui Iisus are both part of the Romanian Christmas carols repertoire. Both pieces are part of Elena Mîndru’s first album Romanian Christmas Stories (2012, EM Records) that celebrates 10 years in 2022. The medley arrangement of these two beautiful winter songs was commisioned by Elena Mîndru from Andrei Tudor for this special Hybrid project.

The tradition of caroling among Romanians is ancient, having its origins in the cultural / religious hearth of Dacia in late antiquity. The appearance of this custom cannot be dated accurately, but the poetic content of the carols indicates that they originate in Romanian people’s early Christianity. In the course of history, carols circulated orally,. They were recorded in writing and set to music / or: Their lyrics were written down and their music transcribed? notated musically much later, especially on the pages of religious books, on breviaries, or in collections of carols, and they were taught by church clerks.

Aseară pe-nserate tells about Virgin Mary’s journey to and her arrival at Bethlehem the night when Christ was born. This carol can be found written in neumatic music notation in the liturgical collection of Putna Monastery located in the northern part of Romania, a monastery with more than 500 years of history.

Legănelul lui Iisus describes the idyllic moment when Virgin Mary is rocking her newborn baby to sleep. On a deeper level, the song is about the miracle of life, about that perfect moment when time stands still and nothing else matters. All the richness of the world is less valuable than one baby smile. The Romanian tenor Valentin Teodorian made the song well-known across Romania.
