This tune started our collaboration with JBB, and led to this wonderful album. Even though it has already been released with a quintet on Evening in Romania (2014), I wanted to record this big band version too, because of its importance, and what it represents for me. It wonderfully connects Romanian and Finnish cultures, and inspired jazz journalist Pentti Ronkanen to praise this kind of music as being “a good idea for the whole evening”.
Evening in Romania has taken on many forms, first in 2011 for a symphony orchestra as part of my bachelor studies’ final work, then in 2013-14 for my Finnish quintet. In 2014 I rewrote it for the Transylvanian Symphony Orchestra, as part of my first Symphonic meets Jazz concert. I again transformed it in 2015 for JBB, and it has been such a great journey to see it adapting for all these great constellations.
It is about love, freedom, life and connecting with our inner selves.
