I took Jarno Kukkonen’s course on big band composing in Sibelius Academy’s Jazz Department, and found writing for big band extremely interesting. I began deeply analysing compositions by Maria Schneider, Bob Brookmeyer, and Bob Mintzer, which inspired this tune. It has been performed by UMO Jazz Orchestra, and pays tribute to McCoy Tyner’s music, combined with strong African influences.
