Hybrid is Elena Mîndru's first symphonic jazz album, a Hybrid of own compositions, carols, Romanian and Finnish songs.

10 years after her success in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, when Quincy Jones himself, as head of the jury, awarded Elena both the 2nd Prize and the Public Prize, 10 years after the release of her first album – Romanian Christmas Stories, Elena comes back at the end of 2022 with a musical story that celebrates – through feelings and experiences concentrated in 9 pieces – her hybrid life as a Romanian artist living in Finland. A mixture of nostalgia for the home she left behind, of Romanian traditions, poetry reflecting a Nordic landscape, vulnerability, family, the reflection of her childhood values in a completely different space – all of these have found their expression in her first symphonic jazz album featuring her quartet and the Moldovan National Youth Orchestra.

About the Hybrid album, the international music journalist specializing in jazz, Henning Bolte said, “Hybrid can also be considered a statement of one of the highly profiled Romanian jazz musicians working abroad. Romanian and Finnish temperaments are productively united in this project forming an extraordinary Eastern alliance of high significance for Europe.”

about

music & lyrics: traditional, arrangement: Andrei Tudor

O, ce veste minunată is a well-known Romanian traditional carol, that was first transcribed by the musicologist and folklorist Dumitru Kiriac Georgescu at the beginning of the 20th century. Having been sang and played for more than 150 years, the song is nowadays considered a landmark of the national Romanian musical treasury. Like many other traditional songs, it has a lot of text and melody variations, depending on the part of the country it is sung in. Over the years, many composers have written different harmonization or orchestrations for this carol, some of them being currently in use.

The jazz quintet version of O, ce veste minunată is part of Elena Mîndru’s first album Romanian Christmas Stories (2012, EM Records) that celebrates 10 years in 2022. The orchestral arrangement was written by Andrei Tudor, and it was commissioned for the Hybrid project.

lyrics

O, CE VESTE MINUNATĂ!

O, CE VESTE MINUNATĂ!
ÎN BETLEEM NI S-ARATĂ
ASTĂZI S-A NĂSCUT
CEL FĂR' DE-NCEPUT
CUM AU ZIS PROROCII.

CĂ LA BETLEEM MARIA
SĂVÂRŞIND CĂLĂTORIA,
ÎNTR-UN MIC SĂLAŞ,
LÂNGĂ-ACEL ORAŞ,
A NĂSCUT PE MESIA.

PE FIUL ÎN AL SĂU NUME,
TATĂL L-A TRIMIS ÎN LUME,
SĂ SE NASCĂ
ŞI SĂ CREASCĂ,
SĂ NE MÂNTUIASCĂ.
